Volunteer at New Alternatives

One of my most fun afternoons last spring was volunteering at New Alternatives for LGBT Youth.  Members of ACT UP were there making posters for their 25th anniversary action.  The hustle bustle of the space during the Sunday night food program was contagious.  The need for LGBT youth are many. Yet, so is fun of getting to know this population.  Many of the street youth who come to New Alternatives are the same youth who fought in the Stonewall Rebellion and still have yet to see their needs met.  The plight of trans populations, the homeless, those on the edge, this is very much the unfinished business of Gay Liberation/AIDS activism.  To work with them is a joy.

To volunteer at New Alternatives is simple.  Click through the website volunteer page, complete the background check so that we can schedule you for volunteer shifts at New Alternatives.   If you have further questions, feel free to drop myself a line at benshepard@mindspring.com or contact  volunteer@newalternativesnyc.org
