My friend Kate Barnhart sent me a message about the trans rally today at Barclays Center.
Seven murders of trans people across the country in the last two months (and countless others not yet reported).
We talked at the action.
"Anything in New York?" I asked Kate.
"No. Nothing reported. But there was Islan Nettles in 2014."
And before that Amanda Milan, and before that....
Circled up at Barclays Center, we listened to testimony about what had happened and what could be done.
What do you want to see happen, I asked some of the crew from New Alternatives for LGBT Youth, who had come with Kate. These folks look out for each other, practicing mutual aid every day.
"I just hope we are going to get a positive solution," explained one of Kate's clients.
We all do. We talked about affordable housing and lack of support for the T at the end of GLB...
Trans folks feel the backlash every day - in education, work, public accommodations and criminal injustice. There is just too much misogyny, too many punishing the poor.
The call for the action was simple.
Join Trans Women of Color Collective, @VOCAL-Queerocracy, Black Youth Project 100-NYC & Black Lives Matter-NYC on Monday, March 6, 2017 from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at the Barclays Center as we rally to stand in solidarity with Black Trans Women and tell our community “NOT ONE MORE” death at the hands of cis apathy and indifference.
We ALL MUST stand in solidarity with Black Trans women. We are only two months into 2017, and already 7 black trans women have been murdered. They have been stolen from their friends and families through the violence and apathy of cis people, who continually make this society an unsafe place for trans women - from inhibiting access to public spaces and services (such as bathrooms, housing... and healthcare), to generating a toxic, violent culture that polices Black trans bodies. Black trans women have been forced into the most marginalized places in our society, and this puts their lives in jeopardy on a daily basis.
Black trans women are disproportionately impacted by structural and state sanctioned violence that impacts socio-economic growth and development and is inextricably linked to physical violence. Black Trans women continue to be denied access to housing, healthcare, employment and educational opportunities. Now more than ever the Black community needs to SHOW UP for Black Trans women. The Black community need to take responsibility for actively engaging in the violence our sisters face. The Black community have been silent, and that silence is violence.
Black trans women are being murdered by Black cis men and we must name and acknowledge that. We must put an end to this violence once and for all. Our collective liberation depends on the freedom of all Black bodies. Black Trans women have been at the forefront of liberation work. Every social justice advancement towards liberation has been made off the backs, blood and bodies of Black Trans women. Now more than ever The Black community must come together to end the violence against Black Trans women.
